    Crime:
    Murder of William Smith, miller, at night in his bed at home in Skelton-in-Cleveland, on 24 Nov 1770.

    Accused confessed to the murder, saying he was impelled by uncontrollable thoughts to do it, but exonerated his wife Dorothy Atkinson of all part in it. See also TNA: ASSI 45/30/1/1-21.

  • August Carlsen of Sweden and latterly of Kingston-upon-Hull, seaman, 43

    Date: 22 Dec 1896

    Crime:
    Murder of his girlfriend, Juliet Wood, at Kingston-upon-Hull on 23 Jul 1896.

    The murder happened after a prolonged drinking bout between the two; the jury recommended him to mercy, but a reprieve was not forthcoming. Carlsen was the last person to be executed at York Castle.

  • James Murphy of Lambert Fold, Dodworth, collier, 46

    Date: 29 Nov 1886

    Crime:
    Murder by shooting of Alfred Austwick, police constable of Dodworth, near Barnsley, on 31 Jul 1886.

    Murphy was born at Barnsley in 1840, the son of weavers. He had previously spent time in prison for housbreaking at Batley. Austwick had served a summons on him for drunkenness the day before the murder.

    Murder of William Lund / William Laind at Grimston, near Tadcaster, on 24 Jul 1770.

    Public Advertiser, 17 Aug 1770, says murder took place at the White Bear near Kildwick in Craven. See also TNA: ASSI 45/29/3/149-153A.

  • James Moseley

    Date: 6 Apr 1822

    Crime:
    Attempted murder - cutting and maiming of John Mackay at Sheffield Park.

    The victim died, but Moseley had been acquitted of murder at a previous trial on the grounds that the victim died of a pre-existing condition rather than the stabbing.

  • Frederick Parker of Hemingbrough, 21

    Date: 4 Apr 1868

    Crime:
    Murder and robbery of Daniel Driscoll at Hemingbrough on 1 Mar 1868.

    Both Parker and Driscoll had been in the House of Correction at Beverley shortly before the murder and had been discharged within a few minutes of each other. Parker was said to have been born at Holbeck and brought up at Hemingbrough. His parents were dead but he had a sister, Mrs Brooksbank, living at Barmby-on-the Marsh. Parker was the last person to be publicly executed at York.

  • George Mellor of Longroyd Bridge, cloth-dresser, 23

    Date: 8 Jan 1813

    Crime:
    Murder by shooting of William Horsfall, textile manufacturer of Marsden, about 40, on 28 Apr 1812.

    Mellor was the acknowledged leader of the Luddites in Yorkshire; he led the assault on Cartwright's Mill on 11 Apr 1812 and was the man who actually shot William Horsfall. He was one of three men, with William Thorpe and Thomas Smith, to be executed for murder in the Luddite disturbances in Yorkshire.

    Date: 6 Apr 1781

    Crime:
    Murder of Joseph Spink, assistant to Mr Meggison, Sheriff's Officer, by shooting him at the accused's home in the parish of St Martin in Micklegate, City of York, on 18 Oct 1780.

    Tried at York City Assizes, Lent 1781. William Meyer's wife, Mary Meyer, was acquitted of aiding and abetting the murder. See also TNA: ASSI 45/34/2/42-44.
